“Never make fun of someone who speaks broken English. It means they speak another language.” H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Every child deserves to see their home language represented in the classroom. This forms two critical roles. Firstly, doing so validates the personal, ethnic and linguistic identity of the child. Regardless of a child’s competence in their second or third language, acknowledging their capacities in their first provides them with respect. Secondly, bilingual texts facilitate language acquisition. While this can be challenging within a multi language classroom, the rewards of providing bilingual tests are substantial.
