
The IB’s transdisciplinary skills, now called the Approaches to Learning or ATL skills are abilities which will make a student’s learning journey more smooth and fruitful.
Whether it be thinking skills, social skills, skills in self-management, communication or research, explicitly teaching them gives children the tools they need to be independent learners. Throughout a student’s time at school we would aim for them to be exposed to each of these in a variety of contexts.
In order for this to happen it is important for a school to map out the year level Units of Inquiry and the ATL skills being taught and assessed in each. Below is an example of mapping led by me.
